A special experience during my hospice rounds today. Went to see a patient for the very first time. She was in bed, lying on her back, eyes closed, breathing shallowly. I spoke her name and she heard my voice and turned her head, although her eyes did not open. It was clear that she could hear me so I told her I was a Spiritual Counselor and had come to make sure she was not in any pain and not afraid. She never spoke or opened her eyes but made hand signals in response to my questions indicating that she did believe in God but had no particular religion. At one point she made scribbling motions in the air and I handed her a piece of paper, a pen and held my notebook for her to write on. She wrote… “my favorite psalm, The Lord is my shepherd,” which I then recited. She folded her hands over her chest as I spoke, and smiled. “Can you say, ‘Amen’?” I asked her. “Amen”, she whispered. It was the only word she spoke during my visit and when I left she was still smiling. I believe I wrote last week about how inspiring these visits are for me. This should explain why.

When ‘I’ finally realize
we are all connected
by our “I”…
I will finally stop
doing things that hurt
apparent others.
Why would ‘I’ want
to hurt
myself?
