What If…?
Here’s a fun question. What if one single advancement in technology could turn Earth into an absolute Eden, a place where war was unknown, nobody starved to death, and everyone really and truly had the opportunity to do and become the very best they could imagine? What might that advancement be?
Chances are it wouldn’t be a weapon. Somehow or other over the eons, greater more powerful ways to kill only seem to produce greater more horrific pain and suffering. And despite what some of the protesters’ signs say, you can’t “Fight for Peace.” Strange as it seems, to achieve peace you really have to be peaceful, otherwise all you have is a momentary lull in hostilities because of an imbalance in power. Which is why some countries are trying to upgrade their arsenals while countries who already have what the upstarts want are trying to stop them.
It wouldn’t be a communication device either. You’d think so from all the hype about this or that new electronic breakthrough bringing people together. Yet while they do allow us to share ideas and experiences and eavesdrop on how the other fellow thinks, Twitter, Facebook, and YouTube are not truly changing the nature of the world on either end of the transmission, other than keeping more driver’s eyes on hand held devices and less on the road.
Could the magic charm be some energy saving device that uses solar power instead of fossil fuel, some way to grow food in drought stricken lands so nobody has to go hungry, some way to desalinate ocean water so nobody has to die of thirst, a vaccine to end disease? We’re probably getting closer, though now the problem would be how to get this advancement into the hands of those who need it at a high enough profit margin for the companies that own the rights. It’s always something, isn’t it.
However, what if the advancement were a simple modification of the human mind such that all people saw others not as an enemy but a friend, not as some other being “out there”, but as a separate but real extension of themselves, with resources pooled for the welfare of all, and success measured by joy rather than possessions. Do you think a breakthrough like this could have a positive effect for life on Earth?
Well guess what! Hidden behind the outrages chronicled on the nightly news, that’s exactly what’s happening. Right now. Not through some weird scientist mixing potions in his laboratory, but in a natural evolutionary process that is slowly but surely changing the nature of human consciousness one person at a time. When we reach critical mass, the change will be obvious to all.
This breakthrough in awareness, that a single source of consciousness is the universal ground of being, is in tune with the teachings of both science and religion. Its emergence will cause humanity to evolve to a new level of being in the same way the introduction of logical thinking caused the emergence of humanity from the simple primate. And each of us who experiences this new consciousness can expect a sudden life changing perspective of reality similar to that experienced by the two dimensional square in Edwin Abbott’s 1884 classic book Flatland when introduced to the third dimension.
