Who We Are What We Are

Stealing Elections, Being a Dictator, and Higher Consciousness

So is there anyone in America who didn’t think that Ahmadinejad was going to rig the vote in Iran, come out the winner, and be elected to another term?  If so, shame on you for being so naive.

Rigging elections is a time honored tradition for despots and dictators.  Last time I looked it was Zimbabwe, and before that Thailand and Indonesia and El Salvador and North Korea and Namibia and Uganda and Afghanistan and the old Soviet Union where it was easy to do because there was only one name on the ballot.  And, of course, there was Chad… not the country, but the little hanging paper push-out that caused so many Floridians to lose their vote back in 2000, ultimately changing the course of world history.  You don’t think that was stealing an election?  Shame on you for being so naive.  But that’s not what I want to talk about.

It has to be an absolute curse to be a dictator and think you have the ability and the right and the sacred calling to run someone else’s life, much less the life of an entire nation.  What a responsibility.  Most of us can’t make it through an entire day without forgetting something we were supposed to do, doing something we wish we hadn’t, or speaking some words we would like to take back.  It’s not that we’re bad people, it’s just that it’s so easy to take a few wrong turns on the path of life.  And while it’s bad enough if we hurt ourselves in the bargain, how much worse it is if we lead an entire nation, like lemmings, off the edge of the cliff.  Well these guys are no better, nor smarter, nor more capable than we are.  They simply have a different set of values.

So why do they do it?  Is it for the power and the wealth and the beautiful women and that special feeling they get of having everyone else grovel at their feet and kiss up?  Well, in a word… yes.  These are people who measure their value in the scheme of things by public adoration (even if it is out of fear) and physical opulence (even if it is stolen).  How sad, when you think of it.  Requiring the response of others to determine your own value.  What a waste of an opportunity.  What a build up of negative karma.  What a backlog of evil to be worked off in future lives.

“The one who dies with the most toys wins”, is not true, although there are many who live as though it is so.  “Power corrupts. Absolute power corrupts absolutely,” is true.  Too many people who live the second aphorism also believe the first.

“Blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the Earth”, is also true.  Unfortunately, it may take a while.  Keep the faith.
