Who We Are What We Are

The Arc of Life

There are no straight lines in nature.  No shore lines, mountain ridges, tree trunks, river beds, meteorite paths, wave patterns, or human spines.  Why then should we expect our personal and communal lives to be any different?

Life is an arc, starting small, growing to its max, whatever that is, and receding again to where it started.  Each one of us, whatever our skills, abilities, strengths, and accomplishments begins as a helpless infant.  And every human construction, be it a family’s dinner, a work of art, a skyscraper, a city, a company, a nation, or a religious ideal that encompasses the globe, begins with the bud of an idea in someone’s mind that impels them to grow it, nurture it, and bring it out to share with others.  Great accomplishments always start small, for despite what it says in Greek mythology, Athena did not spring full grown from the head of Zeus.

People today are impatient.  We expect a military troop surge to end thousands of years of religious and social intolerance.  We expect an impromptu march down a main street of a city that disrupts traffic for a day to change the views and actions of self-serving, entrenched politicians. We expect a change in the prime interest rate to stimulate the stock market and make us all rich again.  We expect economic and political systems to turn on a dime to help us fulfill our unfulfilled dreams.  We want what we want and we want it now!  Well sorry to say, it ain’t gonna happen.

What is going to happen, however, is that just as in nature, small efforts will build and grow till their cumulative effects will make it obvious to anyone who is looking that change has taken place. As the fully grown oak is encased in the tiny acorn, the intention and purpose of our smallest, most seemingly insignificant actions house within them results that defy our vision and in some cases even our imagination.  And their force only increases as they expand in time.  To use a sports analogy, six inches from the tee, a golf ball will be at the same location in space whether it was sliced or not.  But what a difference that makes several hundred yards out where it is either in the rough or the center of the fairway.

Just because our leaders are looking for instant actions and the quick fix doesn’t mean that we should fall into the same trap.  Look as far down the road as you can when making life decisions if you want them to be the most dynamic and the most beneficial.  Vision what you want for your life, your community, your country, your planet, and act as if it already was.  Your actions will cause subtle energy shifts that affect the mood and actions of others, which in turn, create an environment that affects your future moves.

Remember, change is the only constant.  So why not move things in the direction you want them to go.  Just don’t be upset if it all doesn’t work out the way you want.  After all, there a lot of us out there aiming for the stars.
