Who We Are What We Are

Welcome, Ella Rose

A friend of ours had a baby last week.  One minute she’s huffing and puffing and twenty pounds over fighting weight, and the next minute… actually 27 hours later… she’s lying in a hospital bed breast feeding a beautiful new addition to the family.  Pretty awesome when you stop and think about it.  As for me, I couldn’t help but stop and think about the kind of world little Ella Rose has come into and what life might be like when she’s my age, in 2080.

Will people have learned to live together in peace by then?  Hard to say.  We’ve been hoping it would happen for thousands of years now and almost a hundred years ago the world endured “the war to end all wars”.  But somehow the lesson didn’t get imbedded deep enough into the souls of those who hadn’t participated, and so we keep going through it again and again and again. Different cast of characters, same scenario.  Can’t go on forever without destroying ourselves, can we?

Will we still hate each other for being different?  Will vast portions of humanity still treat women like chattel and other races as less than completely human simply because of the color of their skin?  Will we wish and promote ill on those who worship the one God differently than we do even though we all agree that we’re talking about the same God only with a different name?  Boy, it sounds stupid when you say it that way.

Will money still really be our highest god?   Will the rich and powerful continue to lie, cheat, and swindle to get more and more even though they already have a greater amount than they’ll ever need?  As of today, the spread between those who’ve got compared to those who don’t is larger than ever, the top 1% controlling more assets than the bottom 95% combined, according to a recent study.   Can this go on forever without mass starvation, uprising, revolution, or a complete shakeup of the system?  How far can the rubber band stretch before it breaks?

And there’s global warming, and deforestation, and new flu strains that defy anti-biotics, not to mention polluted oceans, tainted food, violent sectarianism, and a widespread worldwide moral meltdown.  Oh, Ella Rose, what have you gotten yourself into?

Of course, there’s another way to look at it.  Pessimists have been predicting the end of humanity for millennia now, and yet we’ve always seemed to survive.  Somehow or other there’s always enough good in the world to balance out the evil, enough imagination and initiative and caring and empathy to bring us back from the brink.  Enough resilience in Earth, herself, to undue man’s stupidity, enough hope and faith within the human heart to know that life itself is worth living.

I have to believe that when Ella Rose is my age, she will look back on a world filled with good and bad and love and hate and wonder how such a stupid species has managed to survive for as long as we have.  Then again, maybe, just maybe, she will be one of the ones with the new consciousness who will figure out how to do it right.  Why not!  Just look at her.  How can you not believe in truth and beauty and love and hope.

Welcome to my world, Ella Rose.  We’ve been waiting for you.
