Who We Are What We Are

The Siren Call of Fame

The Siren Call of Fame
Within the past several weeks Americans have witnessed several news events created by unscrupulous people who will do just about anything for the sole purpose of becoming famous.  I won’t give these media hounds the publicity they seek by mentioning their names, but we can discuss their actions.
One case, “Balloon Boy”, involved a couple releasing a large helium filled balloon and then contacting the media in a panic to tell them that their six year old son had accidentally gotten stuck  inside and was now floating free at 8,000 feet.  In this made for TV scenario, airplanes and photographers followed the runaway balloon across middle America, sending live feeds to every station in the country as always softhearted Americans sat glued to their sets praying for the trapped youngster.
Once the balloon landed and no one was discovered inside, fear that the youngster had fallen out was quickly replaced by reports that he had been hiding in the attic the whole time, followed in turn, with the revelation that the entire incident was a publicity stunt designed to make the family a household name so they could get onto a reality show.  Think of that… a phony stunt that could have created real danger to real aircraft fabricated in order to become famous.  Unbelievable.
Then this past week a Washington couple somehow or other crashed an official White House state dinner for the sole purpose of getting onto talk shows and becoming celebrities.  The heck with rubbing shoulders with world leaders, all they wanted was the payoff.  It was later discovered that these folks have not only tried stunts like this before, but they are notorious among businesses in their local community for buying the very best and then defaulting on the bills.  When last heard of, they were trying to peddle talk show interviews to the highest bidder, while waiting to see if they would be charged for some violation by the Feds.
Unfortunately, a lot of Americans feel for the perpitrators.  Not that they don’t give lip service to slapping their wrists and saying “Bad Dog”, but they understand the siren call of fame, even the ephemeral fame of a reality show contestant.  What kind of society have we created where one’s sense of self, sense of value, can only be generated by the adulation of others for participation on a TV game show?
Life, itself, is a reality show.  Play it.  Feel the inner sense of self worth that can come simply and clearly by recognizing your part in the larger cosmic scheme of things.  You are who you are plain and simple, with all your skills and talents, all your warts and blemishes.  What can you make out of these props to give you a feeling of fulfillment and accomplishment so strong and so real that it doesn’t matter what anyone else thinks?  Do a good job of that and the rest will follow.
