It’s hard not to throw your hands in the air and cry, “I give up”, when you look around at all the stupidity, dishonesty, and downright evil that exists in the world today. From ethnic violence to corporate greed to partisan politics to the destruction of Mother Earth and so much more, the human race is not demonstrating to the rest of the universe that an intelligent compassionate species lives here. And for someone who tries to live by a higher standard, it’s very easy to merely waggle you finger at others and say “naughty, naughty”, there are so many worthy targets to choose from.
I am guilty as charged. My recent posts contain numerous rants against what’s going on out there and far less suggestions on how to improve things. Well, it’s time to change that. So let’s get positive.
As of this moment, this very moment, know that you are free to substantially improve the world around you by changing any attitude, belief, characteristic, desire, emotion, or force in your life that you wish. You can become more generous, more humane, more loving, more open, and most importantly more peaceful. You can become the new and improved model of yourself that you always wanted to be, the one you knew was in there all the time.
You can smile more, eat less, workout more often, argue less, clean up after yourself, piss and moan less, and actually become an all around nicer person to be and to be with. All this you can do, right now. I mean really. Who else has control over the being you see in the mirror if not you?
But let’s also stay realistic. Even if you can change, mass human conduct and behavior is not going to turn on a dime. We have too much momentum already in place with cultural, religious, and ethnic hatreds and prejudices going back generations to suddenly sprout halos over everyone’s head so that love will steer the stars. (even if we are now in the Age of Aquarius.)
And the individual greed and “Look out for #1” attitude that is the hallmark of the all mighty Capitalist system will continue to rule the financial world for decades at least, even though the septic quicksand it is getting us into is becoming more and more evident and more and more putrid. So if you choose a path towards higher ground for yourself, don’t give up just because the parade heads off in another direction.
Take solace, comfort, and direction from Lao Tzu, the founder of Taoism, who said:
A peaceful man makes a peaceful family,
A peaceful family makes a peaceful neighborhood,
A peaceful neighborhood makes a peaceful village,
A peaceful village makes a peaceful state,
A peaceful state makes a peaceful country,
A peaceful country makes a peaceful world,
And it can all begin with me.
Visualize the type of world you’d like to live in and become an example of it’s finest citizen. And then, as the stone that drops into the pond, note the ripples you create.
